Oak + patience
A program decades in the making.
The Matanuska barrel-aging program began with the 2021 vintages, but its roots go back another quarter century. The brewery traces brewmaster Kevin Burton's work with cooperage and barrel aging to 1996.
Every winter, Matanuska bottles a limited selection from the program. The archive spans barleywine, imperial stout, porter, black beer, Scotch ale, fruit beer, Belgian-style strong ale, and imperial red IPA.
Program history
Built on years of oak work.
Matanuska's published history says Burton's barrel-aging work has received recognition through events including the Toronado Barleywine Festival, Great American Beer Festival, Great Alaska Barleywine Festival, Seattle Hard Liver Festival, and Chicago Barrel Aged Beer Festival.
The program uses multiple cooperage traditions and oak sources, including American, French, Hungarian, and Ukrainian oak.
